Everyone gets upset, experiences apprehension, or feels down sometimes. That’s normal. And it’s common for women to have a range of emotions in response to an HIV or hepatitis C diagnosis. But if you have more intense feelings that last longer or seem overpowering, it may be a sign that you’re dealing with something more serious.
Women living with HIV are especially impacted by depression and anxiety. These conditions can result from receiving an HIV diagnosis and having to learn to manage a complex and stigmatized disease. They can also exist before an HIV diagnosis and then become more difficult for women to deal with as they navigate life after diagnosis.
If you experience depression, anxiety, or both, you are not the only one! Many women are coping with or seeking treatment for a variety of mental health conditions.
