    Mirror, Mirror

    August 29th, 2008

Checking oneself out in the mirror can crumple even the strongest woman. Some wee voice influenced by the “perfect woman” images from ads is bound to offer some critical comment about where you’re lacking: hair, nose, weight, eyes, skin colour…. It’s energy zapping and totally non-productive. Healthy self-esteem affects sexuality and can affect safer sex practices. So what to do? Challenge yourself to change your inner voice and celebrate with a “Damn you’re fine girl” kinda rant that begins with your feet.

The feet? Yes, feet. Moving or still, they are our anchors, defining our connection to the earth. Our legs are wondrous (the longest bone in the body lives there), making great laps for pets, children, friends. Moving, they help us walk, run, swim. Our arms enable us to reach out, hang on, and comfort. Skin is the antenna of the body, sensing warmth, cold, wind, rain, snow, movement, change.

Our bodies house our hearts and souls while we’re here. They are more than a “perfect body,” the “right” shade of hair, or the “acceptable” skin colour. Our bodies, in their very essence, are amazing: complex, ever-changing systems that we have to care for. Big, small, sick, well, mobile or still, they carry us through the world, exposing us to experiences from birth to death. Nuts to the messages that say we aren’t perfect because we don’t fit a stereotype- not thin/ round/ blonde/ dark/ svelte/ luscious enough. We are all unique.

    Take that, mirror
